• FreeServers.com - This is a free, ad-supported Web hosting service that offers you your choice of any one of six domains. Your site address here will be (for example) http://(YourSiteName).freeservers.com. FreeServers.com gives you 12 megabytes of space and "unlimited" E-mail addresses. You also get a free counter, a free guestbook and direct FTP access. (Members are required to display FreeServers.com's 468-by-60 pixel banner on their pages).
  
• Channel21.com - A new free Web space provider that offers you 11 megabytes of space for your personal or business Web site. If you're a beginner, there's an easy "point and click" utility for building your Web site. There's also an "Expert Builder" that allows more experienced users to create their own HTML coding. No spamming allowed.
  
• ACMEcity - A new free Web space provider that encourages users to build fan sites for their favorite celebrities, TV shows, music stars, etc. Here, you get 20 megabytes of space, message board, free E-mail and "official artwork and photos" of top celebrities. You may either build your site with their "Homebuilder" utility or you may upload your own content via FTP. ACMEcity is a joint venture between Warner Bros. Online and FortuneCity.com. (Web sites here are required to display 468X60 pixel advertising banners).
  
• Angelfire Communications - A major free Web space provider, Angelfire recently decreased the amount of free Web space it offers from 10 megs to 5 megs. However, if you use graphics from their stock collection, they're not counted against your space limit. This service is paid for by sponsored annoying pop-up banner ads (Thankfully, you can opt to switch them off). You may advertise your business, but you may not have paid advertising banners on your page. Angelfire offers lots of helpful advice for getting you up and running with your own Web site, even if you're new to Web site authoring.
  • This is one of the most reliable free Web hosting services. Note, though, that you can only upload one file at a time and that Angelfire lacks subdirectories.

• Basic Ministries: Free Web space - Here's a free Web space service that is mainly oriented towards Christians. You get five megs of space and there's no pop-up ads to contend with.
  
• Crosswinds Internet Communications - This site offers free ad-free personal Web pages, with "unlimited space," free E-mail and other goodies, like free Majordomo mailing lists. Free Web space for businesses is also available, although for these types of sites, there's a 25-megabyte limit and you must display a banner on your main page, "above the fold." You may upload your page via FTP or with their upload service that you access through your browser. No porn, "warez" (pirated material) or spamming allowed. We've had a number of complaints from our visitors, who've reported problems uploading their pages here lately.
  
• Escalix Free Web Space - This free Web page provider offers you six megs of space. Here, you upload and edit your Web page with their "Homepage Manager." Access is quick, thanks to their OC-3 (155 mbps) connection. Members are required to display a 468-by-60 pixel banner at the top of their pages, as well as two standard-sized (88-by-31 pixel) icons at the bottom of their pages. No porn sites allowed. Escalix recently upgraded their servers and service has greatly improved.
  
• Family Point - Here's a free service that lets you set up a "meeting place" for your family in cyberspace. Just sign up and set up your own space on Family Point and then you can take advantage of features like a calendar for keeping everyone up to date. There's also a place to post your photos, an address book, chat, discussion groups and E-mail. (When you sign up here, you'll be eligible for Family Point's "Scratch It Rich Sweepstakes," which is offering a number of cash prizes).
  
• Fast Free Webs - Promising new free Web hosting service that offers you 10 megabytes of space (or 30 megabytes, if you get more than 5,000 visitors/day). Offers "unlimited" upload access, data transfer and Web page traffic. (Most free Web hosters that make this claim eventually retract it: here's hoping that Fast Free Webs can break the pattern.) Fast Free Webs also offers a fast server and 24-hour monitoring. You're required to place their banner on your pages.
  
• FortuneCity.com - Stake your claim at this major free Web space provider that uses a city theme. Some people will probably find this concept appealing; others are annoyed by it, judging from our feedback. Fortune City.com offers 20 megs of space and they've added subdirectory support, making it easier to manage your files. (However, although you get 20 megs, no individual file may be larger than one megabyte).
  • Since the middle of April, we've been receiving a flurry of complaints from visitors about about downtime and access woes at FortuneCity.
    

• Free Sites Network - These people offer 20 megs of Web space and "unlimited" data transfer. You also get server side includes, nightly backups of data, FTP uploading and 24-hour monitoring. No files over 100 kilobytes allowed and no "warez" (illegal software, cracks, serials) allowed.
  • We've had a few complaints that this service is slow in issuing new accounts. Also, you're required to display a large, slow-loading banner at the top of each page, as well as two smaller thumbnail banners at the bottom of each page.
    

• FreeTown - Free Web pages available ``for personal or commercial use, providing the content is legal and rated for general audiences.'' Has a Web page creator form that lets you build your page online.
  
• FreeYellow.com - A fast-growing free Web site provider, Free Yellow offers you a hefty 12 megs of space. There are a number of free Web page enhancements available as well: free animated graphics, a free counter, FTP uploading, free E-mail order forms, a free autoresponder and a "WebSite Wizard," to help you build your pages. FreeYellow.com is also CGI capable (as long as you use their scripts). On the downside, the process of signing up for FreeYellow.com's service is time-consuming and cumbersome. We've recently received complaints from FreeYellow.com users who report problems in updating and accessing their pages at times.
  
• GeoCities - The Web's largest free space provider, with over 3.5 million "Homesteaders," GeoCities offers you 11 megabytes of space. You start out by staking your claim in a GeoCities "neighborhood" that offers pages with similar themes to yours (there are over 40 to select from). You then submit an application and are given a password for use in creating your own personal home page. You are then able to use GeoCities' file manager utility to create your home page. Or, you may submit your custom home page and GIFs/JPGs graphics files using the "EZ File Upload Utility." You can also upload your Web page and other files using an FTP client such as this. Like many free Web hosters, GeoCities requires members to either display an annoying pop-up banner, or a regular banner at the top of their pages. They also place a "watermark," image at the bottom of your pages, which some of our visitors have complained causes problems with their HTML.
  • GeoCities has introduced a free affiliate program, Pages That Pay, that lets you earn commissions of up to 15 percent for displaying ads on your site.
  • Some of our visitors report periodic access woes here. We've also had complaints that support is difficult to obtain. However, other visitors report that assistance is readily available through the service's "Community Leaders," who may be reached via E-mail or ICQ.
    
  • GeoCities offers a WYSIWYG online HTML editor, which makes it easier for beginners to make pages. They also launched their own search engine, to make it easier to find members' pages.
    
  • In August, a federal agency accused GeoCities of misusing children's personal information by making it available to third parties. In response, GeoCities agreed to settle the case, promising to modify its site.

• The Globe - This major free Web space provider, which claims 600,000 members, offers six megs of space, along with free E-mail and chat. You may create your Web pages here by writing the HTML coding yourself or you may use this service's "PageWizard" to write the coding for you. This service also offers fun, free multimedia Active X objects called "Things" that you can easily place on your page. "Things" come in several varieties, including games, Web site navigation and holiday themes. The Globe reports that it recently underwent a $20 million upgrade. Coming attractions include more chat rooms, a buddy system with site-wide user searches and an instant "Flash" messaging service.
  
  • Note that buried in the fine print of the their membership agreement, The Globe requires that you give them a "royalty-free" copyright on your site's content.

• Homestead - An innovative free Web space provider that makes it easy to create nice looking pages, within only minutes. Features a powerful, "drag-and-drop" online editor that makes the whole process of building a Web site simple, even for newbies. You can build a site from scratch, or select from their pre-designed, customizable pages. They also offer free chat rooms, guest books and more.
  
  • Requires recent versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer (Netscape 3.0 will not work).
  • A few visitors have reported glitches with Homestead's online editor, including error messages and problems with saving their pages.
  • If you're new to Web authoring and want to get a site set up with a minimum of fuss, check out Homestead Express. This service makes it easy to create a quick site, by following a step-by-step process.
  • Homestead offers a Beta program, which lets you try out new features not available with the regular Homestead service. The only drawback is that some of these services can be buggy.
  • Note that in their terms of agreement, Homestead requires that you give them a royalty-free copyright on any content you place on a page here.

• Hypermart - This service offers you a generous 10 megs of space and "unlimited bandwidth" for your non-porn business-related Web site (no personal sites allowed). Hypermart offers you CGI-bin access and supports Microsoft Front Page extensions. We've had complaints that it can take a long time to upload pages here. Tech support is not easy to obtain here, our visitors report.
  
• The Icestorm Network - This is a reasonably fast, free Web host service that doesn't burden your pages with annoying ads. You get three megs of space, online Web editing & uploading, E-mail forwarding and free tech support. However, you don't get FTP or Telnet access. No porn or spamming allowed.
  
• InfoTeam - This site provides free Web space for nonprofit organizations. You get five megabytes of storage space and 200 megs of data transfer per month. However, you're limited to one update per month. Your URL will be http://www.infoteam.com/nonprofit/YourName. Files must be sent via FTP. E-mail attachments not be accepted.
  
• Internet Trash - Unlike many free Web host providers, which place restrictions on content, these guys say they welcome "offensive, tasteless, useless, trashy, crude, rude, lewd (etc.)" content. (However, no adult content is allowed). What's more, they don't clutter your site with banner ads or pop-up ads. Definitely a change of pace. Here, you get 10 megabytes of space and you upload your content via E-mail or through your Web browser. (Visitors have complained about a lack of tech support here).
  
• Netcolony.com - (Undergoing a server upgrade and currently unavailable). This is a fast-growing new free Web page provider that offers a generous 35 megabytes of space. One big plus here is that they don't burden your site with annoying pop-up windows (although they do require you to display a banner). There are helpful tutorials here on HTML and site design, as well as information on graphics, site promotion, Java and more.
  
• Nettaxi - This service that bills itself as a full-fledged Web "community" offers you a free personal Web site with three megabytes of space, a personal FTP "outbox" and an E-mail account. Nettaxi recently introduced annoying pop-up ads on members' sites. Your Web site address here will be: www.nettaxi.com/citizens/youruserid. Note: some of our visitors report that this service is inaccessible sometimes. We've had complaints about their security features (or lack thereof).
  
• Ostriches On Line - Free home pages to worthy people and organizations. No commercial sites. They prefer small, (under 150K) heavily-used sites.
  
• ProHosting - This free Web space provider offers a generous package. Here, you get 10 megs of Web space, one POP3 E-mail account, an FTP account and CGI access. Your E-mail address here will be [email protected].
  • Some of our visitors report access woes here from time to time. We've had complaints that it is difficult to get a new account set up here. We've also had many complaints about non-responsive customer support.

• Spree.com - A free Web space provider that also offers MLM-type money-making opportunities (we're exploring this ourselves and will be posting a report on our results as soon as we get data). Note: click on the "Your Free Website" link to get your free page. Spree offers other features, such as a guestbook, a counter and a directory manager. Spree is also offering a partners program, in which they claim they'll give you commissions for sending traffic their way.
  
• Tripod - The second largest free Web page service (after GeoCities), Tripod subjects its visitors to annoying pop-up advertising buttons, an increasing trend among free space providers. You get 11 megabytes of space for your site at this service, which is owned by the major search engine, Lycos. Here, you have two options: if you're a beginner, you can use the "Quickpage" option if you want Tripod to write your page's coding. If you know HTML coding, you can do it yourself through the "Custom" option. Once you've signed up with Tripod, be sure to check with Chris's HTML Tutorial Center for a great step-by-step guide on HTML and Web page making.
  • Tripod offers support for Microsoft FrontPage extensions, which means that if you own this commercial Web authoring package, you have more flexibility in what you can do with your site, (such as the ability to easily add text searches). However, we've had a number of complaints that Tripod's FrontPage server is slow and buggy.

• WebJump - WebJump offers a generous 25 megabytes of space. It's easy to get set up at this speedy hoster. At one time, they appeared to take tech support seriously, although we've had a number of recent complaints about WebJump not responding to requests for help (and WebJump has removed their 1-800 number from their support page). Note that you must display their 150-by-75 pixel banner on each page.
  • Your external links will be modified and the page they point to be displayed under WebJump's banners.
    
  • We've had complaints of periodic outages with WebJump.
    

• WebSpawner - WebSpawner is a free online Web authoring system that lets you design and develop customized Web pages in a matter of minutes - without having to learn HTML.
  
• Xoom - Once known mainly for its extensive clipart collections, Xoom offers a popular (3 million members) free Web page hosting service. On March 15, Xoom increased the amount of Web space they offer from 11 megabytes to "unlimited." You may use your free Web space to build your personal or small business home page. You also get free clip art, chat rooms and E-mail. Also note that you may not display paid advertising banners on your Xoom pages. You will need an E-mail account to sign up. You can get a free E-mail account here.
  • Expect lots of junk mail from Xoom after you sign up. We've had visitors report that it's difficult to unsubscribe from their E-mail mailing lists.
  • Note: although Xoom doesn't mention it in their terms of service, they do not allow multilevel marketing (MLM) business pages here. We've had visitors report that their MLM pages were yanked off the system abruptly.
  • Xoom has begun placing a menu bar at the top of members' pages, which many of our visitors have complained about. See an example here. They're also removing meta tags (which makes it difficult for your site to be indexed by the search engines).
  • Tech support requests here only get you a form E-mail letter, asking you to go to the site for more information.

  Zy.com - A major, speedy free Web hoster and free graphics provider, Zy.com offers users a "trial" account that gives you four Web pages, with two megabytes of storage space, and a choice of up to 10 template design styles. It's fairly easy to create professional-looking pages here and they offer a nice variety of graphics for use on your pages. Your Web site address here will be: www.ZyWorld.com/(YourSite). Zy.com also offers users a free E-mail service. Technical support here is above average, our visitors report. (Note: they place their banner on all user's pages).
  

Free Stuff For Webmaters

• PositionAgent - Do you know where your site ranks in the search engines? If you try to find out, it can be a tedious, time-consuming process. PositionAgent, a commercial service, specializes in rounding up this information for you. At the bottom of their site, they offer a free version of their service that lets you view the search engine rankings for your Web site on 10 top search engines for a selected keyword.
  
• FreeFind - With this helpful, free service, you can easily add a local search engine to your Web site. You can add search capabilities to your site, without CGIs or server modifications. Visitors to your site will see a search entry form that looks like part of your site, because it can be customized with your own background and logo. (The best service of its kind available on the Web).
  
• Freedback.com - This outstanding, pioneering service is perfect for Webmasters who'd like to add interactive forms to their site, but don't know a scripting language. Just follow the easy instructions here and Freedback.com will generate a custom form for your site. Several other similar form generators have emerged in the wake of Freedback.com (formerly known as FreeForm), but this service is still the best of its kind.
• Easy Submit - Do you want to get the word out to the search engines about your Web site? This free service lets you easily submit your site to over 50 search engines.
  
• Alx' Free Web Polls - Wondering what's on your visitor's minds? Have you recently added a new feature to your site and you'd like to know what your visitors think about it? Then click over to this site to get a free, easy-to-implement custom poll for your Web site. Just sign up and follow the step-by-step guide and then paste a snippet of HTML code to your page and you're good to go.
  
• Visitor Poll - Looking to find out what's on the minds of your site's visitors? Find out quickly with this new, state-of-the-art polling service. Easy to set up: just answer some questions, customize your poll and add a snippet of coding to your page and you're all set. Polls are updated in real time and graphical poll results are available.
  
• FormMail.To - A handy free service that lets you easily create customized E-mail forms for visitor feedback, surveys, orders, etc. Here, you can create an E-mail form with any input fields you need, including pull-down selection lists and checkboxes. You can have all your data validated for proper content and format. Options include password-protected forms and forms that can only be used from "registered" page links.
  
• Website Designs - Solid resource for Webmasters, offering a number of worthwhile free goodies, including a banner exchange and a free graphics section. Be sure to check out the "Web Builder Zone," where you'll find loads of info on site promotion, winning awards, site building tips & tricks and more.
• SuperStats - Excellent free Web page statistics service that serves up all the information about your visitors you could ask for. It allows you to see how many people have visited your site; total & unique visits; browser types; visiting domains; referral listings (how visitors found your site); what time of day they visited; traffic patterns and much more. The Free Site reviews the Web's best free counters and trackers here.
  
• Infinites NET - A handy resource for Webmasters, this service offers several free goodies to spice up and enhance your Web site. Infinites NET offers an excellent counter/tracker service that offers loads of info on your visitors. You'll also find a highly-customizable free guestbook service. There's also a free bulletin board system that may be used as a message board, an announcement board, discussion forum, etc.
  
• Link for a good cause - Webmasters can take a shot at winning prizes (and do something for a worthy cause) by linking to this site, which benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. If you link to this site and sign up under the "Webmaster" login page, you'll have a shot a winning prizes ranging from a T-shirt to a color TV. (You'll also get a spot on their "Link Partners" page).
  
• Website Lunatic - Here's a good, informative resource for any Webmaster. Website Lunatic offers loads of categorized listings of free programs and services to help Web site owners. Topics include banner exchanges, CGI scripts, clip art, counters, E-commerce, free software, JavaScripts, online tools and lots more.
  
• Sitelaunch - This new, well-researched site offers loads of free goodies, and much useful information, for Webmasters. From announcing your Web site to starting an affiliate program to creating graphics, you'll find plenty of helpful reading here. Webmaster Aaron Dragushan has created a resource that is a must-book for any Webmaster, from newbies to pros.
  
• Free Games for your Web Site - One sure way to draw visitors to your site is to add fun, interactive content. And free games that offer prizes are a good way to achieve this. There are a number of services out there that let you easily add interactive games to your site. But Uproar offers the best program around. And they even pay you 50 cents every time a visitor signs up to play their free games. Uproar's "Blitz Associates Program" is free itself and the Java-based trivia games they offer are quite entertaining.
  
• Promotion World - Joshua Reimer's site is a treasure trove of free resources for promoting and marketing your Web site. There's over 400 pages here, including a tutorial for beginners, as well as dozens of articles from noted site promotion experts. There's also online tools to help you create your site's meta tags and for submitting your site easily to various search engines.
  
• Announce It America - This Web site submission service offers a free version for those who have non-commercial, personal sites. They'll submit your site to 500 search engines, directories, "what's new" sites, classifieds and free-for-all-links.
  
• Website Abstraction - This is a very bookmark-able resource for various Webmaster freebies: JavaScript, graphics and Web tools. There's also a good Microsoft FrontPage tutorial. With sites like this around, it's amazing that people still pay $30 or $40 for (often stale) books on Web authoring!
  
• Webmasters Only - A helpful roundup of all sorts of freebies and free services for Web authors. Whether you're looking for a good counter, a banner exchange, or a JavaScript or if you're trying to develop your Web editing skills, this is a good place to go. There's also a META Tag generator and a basic HTML tutorial and much more.
  
• eBoz Directory - Michael Wong's fast-growing, information-packed resource is a must-visit for any Webmaster. eBoz offers loads of categorized listings on hundreds of topics. From making money on the Web to designing and promoting your site, you'll find hours' worth of browsing here. You can also rate the various resources you find here (and see how other visitors have rated them).
  
• Delphi Message Forums - Using this excellent free service, you can easily set up a customized message board on your Web site. It's a great way to create interactivity with your visitors. You can promote and share your interests; meet like-minded people; keep in touch with family; schedule and advertise events; and much more. You can also administer your board (delete messages, set options, etc.)
• Websponsors.com - If you want to earn revenue with your Web site, this is the place to go. WebSponsors.com is by far the most reliable, competent and trustworthy Web site revenue program on the Web. Since launching in April 1998, WebSponsors.com has emerged as the top results-based Web ad network. The Free Site has been a member of WebSponsors.com since June, 1998 and we've found them to be by far the best service of their kind. (Very highly recommended).
  
• ClickTrade - Popular, first-of-its-kind service that allows you to set up your own affiliate program and reward your affiliates on a pay-per-click or sale basis. You can also browse through their directory to find sites that'll pay you to link them. A popular program that has over 30,000 Web sites participating.
  
• Soar.to - Get a short, easy-to-remember URL for your Web site, with this free redirection service. This service offers you the choice of three different URLs: http://soar.to/yoursite, http://vault.to/yoursite and http://scramble.to/yoursite.
  
• Mike's World - HTML guru Mike Lester's site is a good resource for Web page designers and serves up plenty of free graphics, free CGI scripts, Web design help, free fonts and tutorials.
  
• Webmaster-Resources.com - This site offers a roundup of free Webmaster's stuff, as well as articles about site design and promotion, and a newsletter. They also offer info on mailing list servers; online tools; Web site development programs; counters & trackers; how to make money from your site, and much more. They also offer a free URL submission service.
  
• HTML Wizards - Tom Christensen's site is a solid resource for everyone from newbies to seasoned Webmasters and offers lots of freebies for enhancing your site. There are free fonts, JavaScripts, CGI resources and a strong collection of helpful HTML-related links. You'll also find tips and tricks on building traffic and earning income from your site.
  
• URL4life redirection service - Here's a free URL redirection service that offers you an easy-to-remember subdomain. Using it, your current site address can be something like: http://mypage.url4life.com/. Other examples include: http://mypage.u4l.com/ or http://mypage.w3site.com/. If you prefer, you may put a "www" in front of your subdomain.
  
• The Mighty Informatron - Having fresh, constantly-updated content is one way to keep your visitors coming back. And here's a way to add interesting, updated info to your site. The Mighty Informatron offers a free, co-branded news channel to Web site owners. This Java-based channel features live news and sports scores, as well as stock market updates, etc.
  
• HtmlOthello - Here's a neat, free way to add fun content to your Web site that'll keep your visitors coming back. This service offers a free HTML version of the classic board game Othello. Features bright colors, 3D graphics and speedy gameplay. The "Personal Edition" of this online game is free.
  
• Zooming.to - Here's a free, easy-to-use redirection service. Using this service, your site's URL will be zooming.to/(yourpage). No sites with porn, "warez," or offensive materials allowed.
  
• The Promoter - Here's a useful, free service that lets you submit your Web site to 450 search engines and directories in real-time, a process that can take anywhere from five to 60 minutes. (Which is not much time compared to the many hours it'd take to do this by hand). No adult-oriented sites allowed.
  
• Over.to - A free URL redirection service that will give you a shorter, easier-to-remember Web site address. Instead of having a long cumbersome address like http://www.geocities.com/soho/4300/mypage, you can have a shorter URL here, such as http://over.to/mypage.
